INWES

Międzynarodowa Sieć Kobiet Inżynierów i Naukowców (INWES) powstała w roku 2002 w Kanadzie pod auspicjami i na uprzejme zalecenie UNESCO podjęte na Światowej Konferencji Nauki w Budapeszcie w roku 1999. Utworzenie INWES ogłoszone zostało w Biuletynie Komitetu Badań Naukowych w grudniu 2003 roku [Biuletyn KBN nr12 (95), str. 29].

INWES - jest korporacją pozarządową Not-for profit do której należy ponad 200 tysięcy osób. Są to: korporacje (IBM, Bechtel, ...), organizacje (UNESCO, AAAS-American Association for the Advancement of Science, ...), wyższe uczelnie (University of Maryland), wydziały, stowarzyszenia naukowo-techniczne (SWE-Society of Women Engineers) oraz osoby indywidualne.

INWES - jest organizacją której nadrzędnym celem jest realizacja zaleceń UNESCO i Unii Europejskiej dotyczących zwiększenia liczby kobiet, studiujących nauki ścisłe i inżynieryjne; pomoc kobietom w ich dalszym rozwoju zawodowym po ukończeniu studiów i promocja kobiet w różnych dziedzinach nauki, inżynierii, technologii i matematyki - STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) a także w instytucjach światowych podejmujących zasadnicze decyzje w sprawach edukacji i nauki.

INWES realizuje różnego typu programy edukacyjne i wspomagające profesjonalny awans kobiet naukowców i inżynierów w krajach całego świata, organizując co roku mniejsze konferencje naukowe ("BIEN2003", Daejeon-Korea) lub Warsztaty (Leadership Workshop for African Women Scientists, Nairobi 2004) a co 3 lata Międzynarodowe Konferencje Kobiet Inżynierów i Naukowców (ICWES13-Seul, 2005).

INWES -posiada rozbudowaną stronę internetową ( www.inwes.org ) oraz swoje czasopismo "INWES Newsletter" - wydawane przez AAAS w Waszyngtonie, gdzie członkowie przysyłają ciekawe informacje o swoim miejscu pracy, mieście i kraju. Poprzez sieć linków między korporacjami i organizacjami na stronie INWES, jej członkowie mają dostęp do wszelkich potrzebnych informacji (granty, stypendia, studia, dostępne stanowiska, szkolenia zawodowe, baza ekspertów z różnych dziedzin) a także mogą nawiązywać współpracę i realizować wspólne programy.

W Europie, instytucje i osoby indywidualne - członkowie INWES, otrzymują dodatkowe punkty przy składaniu projektów do Unii Europejskiej, jako realizujące zalecenia unijnego postulatu "O równości szans" .Nie jest to bez znaczenia podczas procesu ewaluacji projektu. Do korporacji INWES należy obecnie ponad 200 tysięcy kobiet z całego świata.

This is an email to update members on INWES activities and future directions. The first great news is that INWES has digitized all the ICWES conference proceedings from 1964 to our last event in 2005, thanks to the efforts of our Board Director Dr. Suriya Thevar (India).

This rich information will be made available to our members-in-good-standing prior to mid-May.

Another tool is in advanced stages of development. It is an information resource tool on women in development; it provides a map with several indicators and rich data on women and health, education, governance on several West African countries. The tool will be expanded to several other countries during the summer of 2006 and integrated to the INWES web portal for members at the end of the summer.

Our Corporate members have, for the most part, renewed their membership. We have received wonderful support from IBM which will help to fund the planned developments of the web portal (this summer)and provide some grants for start-ups of organisations of women in STEM in developing countries.

Several organisations have renewed their membership. For the others who have not, this is a reminder that the web site will be updated on May 1st and will reflect the membership as it stands on that day. So I encourage everyone who has not renewed to do so in the weeks ahead.

The University of Wroclaw , as the first university in Poland, became organisational member from March 30, 2006.

The executive committee met by teleconference last week (using free SKYPE services). We are planning the next Board meeting (BM7) which will be held in Lille (France) on May 21-23. If any of our members are interested in attending this meeting, please inform our Secretary General (Claire Deschenes) in the next couple of weeks.

INWES cannot support travel for any member (including Board members) for this meeting, as our funds are mainly used for project development and basic operational costs (accounting costs, etc...). However members are welcome to be observers at these meetings and participate in small group discussions on key topics. The Lille meeting will be very special as we have several key guests speaking at and attending the meeting on the 23rd (UNESCO, Engineers without borders, World Federation of Engineering Organizations, European representatives on women in STEM and many more).

In closing, I encourage individual members to think of creating small organisations of women in STEM fields in their geographical area. INWES is principally a network of organisations and we have a manual on why and how to get this done. So do not hesitate to write to Claire or to me to get a copy. These organisations can then become organisational members, gaining many additional benefits in INWES.

Over twenty items were submitted from all over the world for our next newsletter. It is expected to come out for our Lille meeting and will be posted on our web portal soon after this.
